What is Health

In today's society, the concept of health has become a buzzword, especially with the rise of the internet. Everyone seems to have an answer for their own ailments and, even more so, for the problems of others. Some individuals elevate themselves above the rest, delivering self-righteous proclamations of superiority. Meanwhile, companies often fund one-sided scientific studies that skew results to favor their business interests. Information is scattered across the internet like confetti, overwhelming our phones and social lives with messages about what we should eat and how we should live to achieve optimal health.

This raises an essential question: What is health? What does that term truly mean in practice? From a scientific perspective, health can be defined as the optimal functioning of the human body, where all systems work harmoniously with minimal energy loss and efficient waste removal. However, if I am to commit to a healthier lifestyle, this clinical definition feels disconnected from my lived experience as a human being.

Given the overwhelming confusion surrounding health today, with conflicting information and numerous questions to navigate, it's all too easy to find ourselves veering off course. Motivation can quickly dwindle, leading us back into the familiar habits of unhealthy eating and exercise routines.

Health has become a taboo word, often evoking a sense of discomfort in many who hear it. However, I believe there's a different and more insightful approach to this topic. Food is more than just sustenance; it shapes our identity and subtly infuses us with its inherent qualities. It's not merely about being healthy; it's about making choices that define who you want to be. What kind of thoughts do you wish to experience? What emotions do you want to embrace? What kind of life do you aspire to live? Food serves as the foundation for these concepts, influencing how our nervous system communicates, as well as the speed and efficiency of our digestive processes. Every moment your body experiences after eating is intricately connected to the food you've consumed. Did you have a disagreement with your partner? Have you considered how your dietary choices over the past week may have impacted your ability to communicate effectively? If not, it might be time to reflect on this connection.

Everything you consume—whether through your mouth, eyes, ears, nose, or skin—shapes your body and mind. These inputs flow through your system and manifest as thoughts, feelings, emotions, ideas, inspiration, and even waste. What you taste, hear, watch, smell, and touch all contribute to your identity as a human being. When your body, mind, and spirit align through mindful consumption, you may discover what is often referred to as health and happiness.
